Verbier sits on a southwest-facing terrace at 1,500 m above the Val de Bagnes, a village of chalets built around the Place Centrale. Lifts from Médran and Savoleyres open into the 4 Vallées, the largest linked ski area lying wholly inside Switzerland, and reach 3,330 m at Mont Fort. Above the treeline the terrain is open and steep, and several of the best-known descents, among them Chassoure-Tortin and Gentianes-Tortin, are marked itineraries left ungroomed.
